What a fantastic week it's been.

Whilst last week's matches were dominated by torrential downpoors and soggy greens, this week we have been bathed in warm to very hot sunshine for days on end, as the UK recorded record temperatures.
It makes the game of bowls a pleasure to play, although some have their limits in the heat, as shown when this week's ladies' friendly match was cancelled due to the high temperature.
Triples Competition this weekend
We are all set for our club triples day and pulled pork BBQ this coming Saturday, 30th May.
The team sheet is below - dress is whites. Players, please arrive between 9.30 and 9.45 for registration, to ensure a prompt start. It promises to be a competitive and fun day of bowling.
We would love to see plenty of spectators cheering on the players, particularly the finalists. The bar will be open, as usual. The final kicks off at about 3.30pm. Our pulled pork BBQ starts about 5.30pm. The cost is £5 per person - please bring cash for this.

News from this week's Committee meeting
Car sharing.
Do you need a lift to matches?

As a small club, we need everyone to be available in order to be able to sucessfully field teams, both at home and away.
If the only thing stopping you signing up for a match is transport, there will usually be a lift available.
Please look out for - and use - our new initiative;
If you request to play on the website or Spaces app, you will now see the questions 'Do you need a lift? and 'Can you provide a lift?' . Complete them as required. If the answer to each of the questions is no, leave them blank
If you sign up in the clubhouse, there will be a place on the team sheet to add your name and the location you live/can pick up from for either of the above questions
Using the information you provide, the selection committee hopes to match people to car share. Then, it will be up to the 'car sharees' to arrange details with each other. Telephone numbers are in the club handbook. Hopefully, this will help everyone to join in, and prevent match cancellations due to shortage of players.
Keeping our club clean
We all like to walk into the clubhouse and see it looking clean and tidy, particularly when we are entertaining visiting teams. Unfortunately, this isn't always the case and it relies on members taking their turn to do cleaning duties.
The rota was circulated at the start of the season - but here it is again! It is also on the notice board in the clubhouse.

Please take note of your week for cleaning - we expect you to do this at least once or twice during the week, depending on how much the clubhouse is used, to ensure that the clubhouse is a welcoming place for members and visitors alike.

Cleaning materials are stored in the gents toilets, with additional supplies under the sink in the kitchen. Toilet rolls, bin liners and paper towels are in the storeroom behind the bar. If you use the last of any product please write it on the notepad in the kitchen and it will be replaced. Here is a reminder of the work to be undertaken.
If you are not available on your allocated week please arrange to swap with someone else.
Please make sure that you do your bit towards the upkeep of the clubhouse, everyone has to contribute to make it work!

This week's match report
Over 55s, at home to Clarence Golds 20/05/26
Can you remember the TV ''Programme that was the week that was''? Well, we have had such a week. It started with Clarence Golds, with a dash from Banwell to Clarence as there was a mix up about the venue - we were waiting at Banwell and they were waiting at Clarence. It was soon resolved and we started ½ an hour late.
Banwell won the match winning on 4 rinks. The scores were 131 to Banwell and 104 to Clarence. We had a clear winning rink - which happened to be mine - with a 21-shot difference so very well done to Mike Turnbull, and Richard King.
The points awarded were Banwell 16 Clarence 4 so well done to all who played.
Over 55s, away to Ashcombe Templars 21/05/26
On Thursday, again, we won on 4 rinks which should have enough to win but, alas, one rink went down heavily which cost us the match. The star rink this week went to Paul Aldus, winning by a clear 18 shots so well done to him and his rink.
The scores were Banwell 101 shots, Ashcombe Templars 106. The points awarded were Banwell 8, Ashcombe 12.
Being on the end of a thumping is not pleasant; you feel as if you have let everyone down. You must forget it because everyone else will. Look forward to the next match.
Allan Shattock
Over 55s Captain
North 1A team, at home to Nailsea A and North 2B team, at home to Portishead RBL 23/05/26
A warm sunny afternoon saw both A and B teams compete for the points against Nailsea A and Portishead B in North 1 and North 2. It was not the best outcome in terms of results with mixed fortunes for both teams.
The A team unfortunately could not sustain their winning run, going down by two shots to a good Nailsea side, the final score being 44 - 42 to Nailsea. Alan Shattock and his merry band of men won well on Rink 1, whilst the team led by Chris Wilson failed to get going on a tricky rink 2. Chris however had an excellent game. The dream team led by Paul Aldus was there or there abouts for most of the game on Rink 3, going into the last end only two
shots down but eventually losing by four shots.
The B team, by contrast, enjoyed an excellent afternoon, winning on two of the three
rinks and comfortably beating Portishead RBL 66 – 32. Thanks go to Wendy,
Angela M, Kim and Debbie for stepping in when the team was once again short of
players. In fact, all four played extremely well and made a major contribution to the
result.
Well done to you all!

Captain of the Day
North Somerset Mixed League, away to Nailsea 24/05/26
The weather was fantastic and everyone was grateful for a 10.30 start. Both Captains were new to the role - Bob for Banwell and Neville for Nailsea. A toss of the coin gave Banwell the mat. Banwell decided to let Nailsea swap rinks after 9 ends, as per the format explained in last week's mixed league match report.
There was a good mix of new and not-so new players and it was a most enjoyable game throughout.
The final score is worked out on overall total of games won and also number of ends won. Sounds complicated (which it is, first time round!) but after some assistance from the opposing skip's wife, we got there in the end.
The results were, 8-7 Banwell, 7-7 draw, and 9-6 and 5-6 to Nailsea, with 18 ends won each.
Overall, a very close and enjoyable game with Nailsea just winning 23-21.

Umbrella, 25/05/2026
Monday's umbrella was played in very warm sunshine on the hottest May day in UK history, broken again since this was written. Our newcomers Kerry and Alex joined us in 3 rinks of triples, bowling well in spite of their teams' eventual scores.
There were definite winners and losers in this week's competition. Bob skipped the team of Richard and Janis, and beat Alex, Wayne and skip Trevor 42-7!
Skips Wendy and Martin won a similar number of rinks each, with Wendy, Will and Jenny taking the glory with 15 points to Martin, Kerry and Doreen's 10.
On rink 4, Jane, Sue S and skip Alan C battled valiantly and were only 10 behind, when on the last end, Martina, Angela M and skip Dave W pulled out all the stops and scored a hotshot! (all 8 woods in the count) Congratulations to them all.
