Our focus this week is on the social events coming up over the next few months. Read on for details, as well as the match report for a busy week of bowling.
Social Events
Mike Dolling has teamed up with Trevor Garfield to plan our social calendar, and events are coming together for the rest of the year. Following the success of the Steepholmers performance, we are trying some social get togethers that are new to us but promise to be be both entertaining and enjoyable.
Pulled Pork BBQ, 30th May, 16.30 onwards
As you know, our next club tournament is Triples Day (which is now fully subscribed) with a pulled pork BBQ afterwards for players and social members alike. We are looking forward to tasty food, supplied and cooked for us by professional caterers Joe and Collett, long-time residents of Banwell before moving to Locking.
We have just a few places left. Click here to see details and RSVP, or scroll along to the events tab on the Spaces app. We need to know numbers, so don't forget to use the RSVP to let us know you are coming, or tick the list in the clubhouse.
Cream tea and bowls, 14th June, 2-4pm
Fancy a cream tea in the sunshine (hopefully) with our beautiful view of the green, the church and cottages surrounding our clubhouse? Click here for details and to RSVP
We will also be open for visitors to try their hand at bowls. Equipment is provided - you just need flat shoes and a good sense of fun.
Bob has already secured prosecco glasses, so join us for a Sunday afternoon of bowling and bubbles!
Bingo Night, 10th July

One of our favourite social evenings - the bingo night - is always well-attended. The bar will be open, and there will be prizes.
Details and online RSVP will available soon.
Trevor's quiz night, 7th August

Another night of entertainment and competition which always generates a full house. Come and pit your wits against other teams, with Trevor's fiendish and funny brain teasers.
RSVP online coming soon.
This week's match report
Over 55s, away at Portishead RBL 14/05/26
We went to Portishead in this week's over 55's. Unfortunately, the game will be remembered for the weather; it started off quite nice, forcing me to take off my coat, but it didn't last. By the tenth end, the heavens opened with a torrential downpour. The green was covered with hail within minutes, which made play difficult, so the captains agreed to restrict the match to 11 ends.
The result for Banwell was as bad as the weather was poor, as we lost on 4 rinks drew on 1, and won on another. Lee Pheasant's rink was the only rink to win, so very well done. The rink that drew was Mac Kirby, so well done to them.
The scores were Banwell 48 shots , Portishead 64.
Points awarded are Banwell 3, Portishead 17.
Thanks to all who played on a rotten day. Thanks also to Mal for coming in at the last minute.
Let's hope for better things next week when we entertain Clarence Golds.

North 1A team, away to Burnham-on-Sea 16/05/26
Banwell A were on the road once again, this time visiting Burnham. The match started in the rain but thankfully it never came to much.
Although Banwell took a few ends to get going, being down on 2 rinks and drawing the other after 3 ends, by the midway point they were leading on 2 and only one shot behind on the other rink.
A strong finish saw all 3 rinks winning to get the maximum 12 points with a 58-34 victory.

North 2B team, away to Victoria 16/05/26
Rink one started well and went 13 - 1 up, but sadly could not maintain it. Rink two managed to match their opponents score for the first nine ends but fell away. Rink three were always playing catch up and could not hold on in the end.
We were well beaten on all three rinks but enjoyed the day. At least we did not get wet.
A mention for Debbie as she played for the men’s team for the first time.

North Somerset Mixed League, at home to Yatton 17/05/26
It was a chilly but bright morning, as we gathered for the first mixed league match of the season. For those unfamiliar with the mixed league format, 2 games of 9 ends are played on each rink, before the away team decides whether to swap rinks or to ask the home team to do so. Then another 9 ends are played to complete the match.
During the first half, Banwell played well, winning the points on both rinks. Yatton asked Banwell to swap rinks - a logical decision when playing on an away green.
The second half went just as well for Banwell, again winning on both rinks. A special mention goes to Benedict Searle, whose accurate shots knocked away quite a few Yatton woods, helping to keep the Banwell team ahead. Also, welcome back Shawn White.
Final scores were rink 2, 18-8 and rink 5, 20-9.
Points were Banwell 33, Yatton 11.

Umbrella, 18/05/2026
The weather looked ominous as people trickled into the club. However, our members were determined to play. The weather held out, with just a few intermittent light showers, although it was quite cold by the end of the match.
On rink 2, skip Martin with Doreen and Jan, against Bob's team of Angela M and Jim (looking a bit battle-scarred from his recent fall), were even stevens most of the way. Late on in the match, team Bob gained a 4 and a 3, winning by 6.
Rink 5 saw skips Wendy and Debbie go head to head. Wendy, Janis and Sue S were well ahead until Debbie, Dave A and Wayne gained a 6 on the penultimate end. Wendy's team squeaked a win by 3 points.

Well done all!

Ladies friendly away to Nailsea, 19/05/2026
Tuesday morning looked set fair for our ladies friendly in Nailsea but, as we gathered for a 2pm start so did the dark clouds, and the temperature dropped significantly.

Wendy and Wendy, the 2 captains for the day, decided to play through the 18 ends but keep an eye on the weather and perhaps have tea half way through if we had a shower.

The 'shower' blew in with a vengeance after just 2 ends, so we had a very early break for tea, cakes and drying out! It was touch and go whether we would even go out again but as it eventually eased we decided to play a 12 end game.
It wasn't pleasant or pretty but both Banwell teams coped better with the conditions and won comfortably (16-4 and 12-6). Fortunately we had a very warm welcome as always from the Nailsea ladies and look forward to playing them again in some sunshine... please!
