Flaming June? Fetch my big coat....

Weekly News

Good news for the club

The talk this week has been about a local benefactor who has donated £5k to ‘help the club grow its exposure in the Banwell community and assist our club with social activities’. This is great news, and very welcome.

A social sub-committee has been set up to plan activities and ensure the money is spent wisely. Mike Nickson, Trevor Garfield, Pete Shipton, Paul Aldus, Bob Grant, Kim Wright, Sue Taylor and Wendy Coleman have signed up. If you have any ideas or would like to be involved with forthcoming activities, please speak to Mike Nickson.

Friday Evening Pay and Play

The first activity is the creation of a roll-up on a Friday evening for new players to 'pay and play' in an informal atmosphere. After a busy week at work, it's the ideal way to relax, have a bit of competitive fun and wind down for the weekend.

All players need is some enthusiasm and a pair of flat shoes - unlike those in the picture, who are playing in bare feet! Mike Nickson (club captain) and Pete Shipton will be there to greet you and show you the ropes, from 18.30 onwards.

The club is also thinking about buying some extra small woods to enable hosting of youth groups, such as scouts and guides.

And finally....

Just to remind everyone, although our Spaces app is great for members to have quick access to match information and requesting to play, our website has oodles of information about all aspects of the club. Feel free to have a good digital rummage among our pages, bearing in mind that some pages require a membership login, and others are public.

The home page has access to the weekly news, match reports and team sheets, as well as any other current information. However, you can use the main menu to see the fixtures list and read the club's policies on subjects such as safeguarding and etiquette. Members can click this link to see who is on the club's committee, and view the minutes of meetings here.

There is a section the Somerset league, with the rules and latest league tables. The club competition tables are all there, as well as our fundraising and sponsor pages. If you need a new shirt, click the picture of the club shirt for details.

Hopefully, you are enjoying both our website and app. If you have any questions or issues, please have a chat with Kim.

Match Report

5/6/25 Over 55's at home to Portishead

I was well pleased about the result at home against Portishead, but not so pleased about the way that I bowled. It looked unlikely all morning that the game would go ahead, so it was a relief when the rain stopped at about one, and it was clear for the rest of the day.

We won on four rinks with John Wright's rink turning in a great result by winning by a clear 24 shots, so well done to them. We lost on a couple of rinks, but well done to everyone who played, especially to Richard King and Steve Merchant who played in their first ever over 55's game. I hope you will continue to put your names down for more matches. There were no changes to the side that was picked, so thanks for that.

The scores were Banwell 114, Portishead 94. Points awarded were Banwell 16, Portishead 4. That is three games that we have won on the bounce, so well done.

I have been asked to mention that there was equipment left on the green after the game, so can you all check that every bit of equipment is cleared from your rink. I also noticed that a pusher was put in the walkway in front of the club house whilst the match was in progress. Someone stumbled over it, so it was clearly a tripping hazard. I also noticed that the woods were placed directly behind the mat which is another tripping hazard that was on several rinks; please be aware, because it might be you who trips. I will mention this at the committee meeting, especially the pushers, and see what we can better.

Thanks once again

Allan Shattock, coach/ over 55s captain

6/6/25 Ladies' friendly away at Nailsea

Following the cancellation of the ladies’ friendlies, Nailsea offered to play a match with just 2 triples, which took place on Friday 6th June.

The weather was sunny, but with a persistent cold wind, which seemed to blow the woods diagonally across the green - or maybe it was the team of Doreen, Sue and skip Kim, finding a way of explaining their lack of points in a heavy defeat! In truth, Nailsea skip Janet was instrumental in leading her team to a comprehensive victory.

However, we came a worthy second and had a lovely afternoon!

Wendy Coleman

7/6/25 North 1A team Away at Nailsea

It was not a great day weather wise...squally with a threat of thunder about; thankfully it wasn't too bad in the end.

Match wise, it was not our greatest performances: Allan Shattock's rink had a great start, but faded to a 24-16 defeat; Barry Taylor fared little better, going down 20-12, but on a brighter note Chris Wilson steered his rink to a fine 20-15 win.

Match result Nailsea win by 2 rinks to 1 and an overall defeat for us.

John Wright, match captain

7/6/25 North 2B Team at home to St Andrews

Rain for the good part of the day and during the match made it tricky but, fair play to Paul Aldus and his team, as the green bowled really well.

As expected, against a good portion of St Andrews A team from last year our B team struggled, taking a heavy beating on two of our rinks by a combined 41 shots. It was a  much tighter game on our rink going down by 4 in the end. Nil points unfortunately, but we won't have any harder games.

8/6/25 Mixed friendly away at Severn Vale

We arrived at a really friendly and welcoming club. The match was played, as it should, in a brilliant manner. We currently play each other only once per season - we need both a home and an away fixture next year.

The result was tight, with an overall loss by 3 shots, but I don't think anyone will lose any sleep over it. The atmosphere was chirpy and jovial across all rinks. A draw on Wendy's rink, a loss by one on John Wright's who threatened a great comeback after falling behind by a good margin early doors. A loss by 4 on Pete Shipton's rink - he was a last minute replacement (thanks Pete). A win on our rink by two.

Looking forward to seeing them next year.

Mike Nickson
