What a week for wins!

Don't forget this week.....

Members, please bring home-made cakes and raffle prizes if you can.

Social Friday public bowling events

Friday is our new social day of the week, with Bowls Bash open to members at 2pm until about 3.30pm. We have invested in some junior woods, and will be welcoming local school children soon.

Pay'n'Play evening sessions for both members and non-members is currently being successfully piloted. Obviously, Pay'n'Play is free to our members.

Captain Mike says Pay'n'Play starts at 18:00 but you can turn up any time up to eight pm. It's been well supported and very popular, earning the club decent income and topping up our MNDA charity as well. Come along and bring your friends.

You will see evidence of the new events around the club, such as the Bowls Bash banner, and the sign up sheets for evening sessions.

If you have any questions or suggestions, talk to Kim about Bowls Bash, and Mike Nickson about Pay'n' Play.

Ask Allan

Law 7- Position on the mat

Before delivering the jack or wood, the bowler must be standing on the mat with at least one foot or part of the foot on the mat. At the point of delivery the player must have at least one foot or part of the foot on or over the mat. If a player does not comply with this law, he is committing a foot fault then law 8 comes in.

Law 8- Foot Faulting

The player's wood must be stopped and declared dead. If it was impossible to stop and it disturbs the head, then the opposite skip must decide whether to replace the head to how it was before it was disturbed. He/she may leave the head unaltered or choose to declare the end a dead end.

I was asked what happens when a player goes out of turn. The quick answer is, if the head has not been disturbed, send the wood back and carry on. However, if the head has been disturbed, the opposing skip has to decide whether to carry on or put the head back to how it was. I will go into this law in more depth when I discuss Law 29.

Carry on enjoying your bowls,  Allan.

And finally....

Hillary and Wendy progressed further into their county mixed doubles competition, with a magnificent 22-14 win against their Wrington opposition. It's a shame we had a match away otherwise I am sure the support would have been good.

Well done and good luck in the next round.

Match Report

17/06/25 Over 55s at home to Ashcombe Templars

I remember last year when everyone was saying when are you going to give a winning speech? Well am getting used to it now, so very well done to you all.

Special mention to Mike Nickson and his rink for being clearly the rink of the day by winning by a clear 13 shots, so very well done. Out of interest, at the halfway stage we were loosing by 11 shots, with some rinks well down ,so everyone deserves a pat on the back for turning a 11-shot deficient into a 20-shot win in nine ends.

The scores were Banwell 115 shots, Ashcombe Templar's 95 shots. Points awarded were Banwell 16, Ashcombe Templars 4.

Captain's suggestion - as it was a hot afternoon - it would be nice if we could have water at the end of every rink so the players could have a drink when they needed it. Also, could you please put your names down to play not only the over 55's, but other matches as well; it makes the selectors task that much easier.

Yatton home next week.

Thank you all.

Allan Shattock, over 55s captain

21/06/25 North 1A at home to Clevedon B team /North 2B at home to Victoria C team

It was a scorcher of a day, with temperatures topping 30 degrees. We were aided by a half time break with the kindly intervention of ice lollies, towels and flannels provided by Dee and Wendy. These were greatly appreciated and much needed by all the players. Many thanks from us all - you saved the day.

The matches went well for both teams.

The A team had a tight affair, running out winners thanks largely to a big win on Hillary's rink, whilst the other two rinks kept it tight enough to enable us to pick up 8 points with a 59-56 win.

The B team had a win too. This time it was Alan Vickery's rink who had a massive 20 shot win; a young Mr Biddlecombe played too with the other two rinks being tight, similar to the A team match. Terry Byrnes' team clawed their way back in the game, after being 13-7 down at one stage. it was all square going into the last end - they picked up 2 shots for an 18-16 win.

Our rink went into a final and shoot out, also, but alas we couldn't manage Terry's feat and lost by 2. This meant we had a 10-2 win for a 66-46 win. Well done to all who endured the heat.

The bar did fine business. Thanks to Janis and co. for helping out once again.

22/06/25 Mixed friendly away at Ashcombe

This friendly was played on a much cooler day, but still humid enough to warrant a cold drink or two. Banwell came out with a big win here with wins on all but one rink.

The match had a good contingent of home supporters and a smattering of our own watching on a relaxed Sunday afternoon. They were well involved in clapping good shots, regardless if it was a home or away delivery.

Thanks to all that played.

Mike Nickson, club captain

.
