Rinks Day Glory in the sunshine

Rinks day got underway on Saturday 10th August with six teams competing for the coveted trophy. The day dawned bright and very warm, and teams set out to play their four matches in good spirits seeking to qualify for the final to be held later in the afternoon. Team Wright started as they intended to continue with resounding wins over their opposition, and it was no surprise that they qualified for the final with consummate ease.
In contrast the other games were evenly contested, and it was only at the end of the fourth game that an opponent for Team Wright emerged. A rink skipped by Hil Guckian came back from a four-shot deficit to win on the last end against Dave Williams followed by a narrow win over Harold Clarke, last year's winner, and finally a comfortable win against the Presidents rink.

A good crowd stayed on to watch the rink skipped by John Wright take control going 11-1 ahead after only 6 ends. At that point the President suggested to Hilary that he give up and come inside for a beer. However, the final six ends saw the biggest comeback in the history of the rinks competition with a final score of 14-12 going to the never say die rink of Hilary, Dave Allen, Mike Dolling and Leigh Bean.

The day concluded with the trophy presentation by President Barry who then had to buy the beer, and the usual banter that follows such events continued in the bar. Some folks like their club doubles so much they can’t remember who bought them and when and it was therefore no surprise that John Amos was among the last to leave after refusing to go home on a number of occasions!
My thanks to everyone who helped make the day so successful by helping out, not least Janis and Bob for the bar and Dee Bean for the teas but most importantly to all the members who supported the event.

Give us some green on the final Umbrella Night, 18th August

I hope you looking forward to our last umbrella of the season, which promises to be a fun night of fancy dress, bowling and a fish 'n'chip supper. This year we have a theme; if you don't have fancy dress, why not 'Give us some green!' - just normal clothes, but green....
Click here to see the umbrella table - the latest one will be uploaded as soon as it is available.

Triples Day
Triples Day is coming up fast. Our final internal knockout tournament of the season is on Saturday 23rd August, possibly running onto 24th for the finals, depending on number of entrants. Sign up online or on the app, or look out for the sheet in the clubhouse. Each entry is £3, paid to your skip on the day, as usual. All members are welcome for another fun day on the green.
Please click the link to respond to the invitation to the BBQ if you are planning to eat at the club afterwards, to help us estimate food requirements. It's £5 per head, payable at the time. You don't need to play to come to the BBQ, but please register for the match if you can.
Angie Bass is defying gravity - again!

Angie says Not long now before my second abseil for the Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity on September 6th down St Michael’s Hospital. This time I’m doing it in memory of my own St Michael, my lovely husband, Mike who I lost so suddenly earlier this year.
Any donations will be gratefully received for this amazing charity. Thanks to all my friends who have already donated, let’s hope for decent weather.
Match Report
Over 55s at home to Winscombe Pioneers, Weds 6th Aug
Banwell hosted Winscombe Pioneers on on a very pleasant warm afternoon. Both sides are about mid-table so it was going to be close on paper; however the afternoon turned out Banwell's way with an excellent 5 rinks to 1 victory.
The biggest win margin was Dave William's triple with a 24 -10 victory. John Wright's team won well 22-17 despite being 8-0 down early on. Hilary Guckian steered his three to a close 1 point win and Mal Laycock negotiated the tricky rink 1 with a solid 20-10 win.
Terry Byrnes had the only defeat on the day by 7 shots, whilst Paul Aldus's team staged a great comeback from 11-5 down midway to record a fine win by 5 shots.
Score 10-2 to Banwell (114-85)

North Somerset mixed league at home to Ashcombe, Thurs 7th Aug
Banwell hosted Ashcombe for the NSML match on Thursday evening. At 5.30 it was pouring down and neither side looked keen to play, but by the time we went out at 6.15, it had stopped; we were lucky to stay dry, although there was a real autumnal feeling.
The first matches were very close, with Doreen, Martin, Bob and Wendy winning 8-7, and Janis, Leo, Angie (Bass) and Alan (Vickery) drawing at 6-6. It didn’t go quite so well for the second match with one team going down 10-2 and the other 13-2. However, due to the scoring system, giving a point for each end won plus 2 for a win (1 for a draw), the overall score didn’t seem quite so bad, 17-23 to Ashcombe.
It was a good friendly match and well played by everyone, but especially one of the Ashcombe players, who was 95 years old! Is this the oldest player we’ve had on the green?

Mixed friendly away to Nailsea, Fri 8th Aug
Nailsea bowls club hosted us on a perfectly sunny afternoon; Captain Derek told me he couldn't ever remember playing such a fixture against Banwell before. The green in years recent has not been the best, but since Avon have been looking after it, it's probably one of the best in the area now, lush and even and a very good speed.
Unsurprisingly, Nailsea being a much larger outfit than us, the going was tough for Banwell. Alan Cockayne recorded a loss but only by four, Kim Wright's team also came second with a deficit of six.
Trevor Garfield and his team had a long afternoon, losing heavily and not scoring in the last nine ends at all. John Wright and his rink recorded the only victory of the day with a 6 shot win.
Result Banwell 51 Nailsea 71....cracking game across the board though, enjoyed by all.

North 2B team away to Winscombe, Sat 9th Aug
The B team were at Winscombe for the postponed match from mid July. The match was captained by Alan Cockayne on the day on a lightening fast green.
Two of the rinks skipped by Alan and Alan Vickery went down by 6 and 8 points respectively, whilst Terry Byrnes's rink came away with a fine win 20-17
Result 50-61 loss
