Club Competition time

Weekly News

The early rounds of the internal competitions are in full swing.

Add the regular Bowls Bash afternoon and home fixtures, and the green is becoming busy.

Don't forget - book your first round matches, especially the men's championship, handicap and veterans, the open pairs, and the 2 wood singles. The deadline for the first round is Saturday 14th June, so less than two weeks to play these games.

Please make sure you check there is a rink free for your match, and reserve it in advance.

The rink-booking sheets are in the yellow folder on the noticeboard - just book a space, then select the rink on the day by picking a number out of the bag - again on the noticeboard.

Ask Allan!

Section 6 - Placing the mat.

As this is a long law, I will paraphrase. I will ignore the section about groundsheets as the groundsman who decides when to employ them.

It's the lead who usually places the mat . It must be two metres from the back ditch and 25 metres from the front ditch and along the centre line. The mat is checked by the skip before the jack is delivered.

If the jack has been bowled and it is discovered that it is placed incorrectly, then the opposing player replaces the mat. Then they bowl and centre the jack, but do not bowl the first wood. Once the first wood has been bowled, it is too late for anyone to challenge the position of the mat.

6-2, Duration of play.

Once play has started, the mat cannot be moved unless it becomes displaced during play, then it must be replaced in its original position. If an opponent picks up the mat before the end is completed, then his opponent must replace the mat in its original position. If in adverse conditions, a player may pick up the mat before he bowls his wood and turn it over for a better grip, putting it down in its original position.

When the end is completed, the mat must be put beyond the face of the back bank; if you are playing a singles match, you can carry the mat to use at the other end if both players agree.

I think I have picked out all the salient points to enjoy the game of bowls. New bowlers may need help in placing the mat, so you bowlers with more experience please help them. Also, they need help when centering the jack, although it's often not a strong point even with experienced bowlers.

Next time, we will look at sections 7-8-9-10.

Drink Tea for MND

We have a charity coffee morning coming up later this month, based at Banwell Bowling Club, in support of those living with Motor Neurone Disease.

A small donation of £3 will get you a tea/coffee and cake, with proceeds being donated to the captain's nominated charity, the MND Association. The event will be hosted by members of the club – all are welcome to attend (members and non-members). We look forward to welcoming you, so that you can drink tea in support of MND.

Click the register now button below to see details and let us know you can come, or just turn up on the day.

And finally....

The next few weeks are quite busy with matches. Please make sure you request to play early (or put your name down on the sheets in the clubhouse). The Spaces app makes it easy to request to play, and provides you with a confirmation email, as well as a reminder the day before. If you don't yet have it on your phone, click the icon below to download and access the app.

Obviously, you can also request to play on the web site using this link to the Match Calendar and still receive the reminders.

Remember, don't sign up unless you are available to play.

Match Report

29/5/25 Over 55's away to Victoria Vikings

On Thursday, we were entertained by Victoria Vikings, a club that I hold dear; it was where I started bowling, and spent many happy years. It was very nice to meet up with old colleagues.

Having said that, I am pleased to announce we had the second win of the season and our first in the league. I could choose any one of three rinks to be rink of the day. Rink six could easily be chosen, winning by only one shot, having been behind throughout the whole game. The team needed four shots to win on the last end, and won with the final wood, so very well done for not giving up.

However, the rink of the day must go to John Wright's team for winning by a massive 28 shots! Paul Aldus's must be mentioned for a creditable 18 shots. Very well done to the players of those three rinks.

The scores were 115 shots Banwell, 100 Vikings. Points awarded were 14 Banwell, 6 Vikings, having both won three ends.

Special thanks to Martin Brand and Wayne Butcher for being last minute replacements.

Please note that if you are picked to play, think seriously before you drop out, as this causes a lot of work the Captain has to do to put right. If you put your name down (or request to play online) it is taken as read that you are available and will play.

1/6/25 NBSA Knockout Cup at home to Congresbury

With our team a bit thin on the ground, Congresbury gained revenge for their loss last year by winning on all but one rink. There were some tight rinks that fell towards the end.

However, we did have a win by Alan Vickery's team. The final score was 69-96. Good experience gained for those that stepped up.

2/6/25 Ladies triples day at Wedmore

On Monday, Janis, Doreen and Wendy played in the first ladies triples day of the season at Wedmore .

The sun shone and we all had a lovely day, playing teams from Long Ashton, Yatton and North Petherton.  We had some close games, drawing one but sadly losing the others... but we were out in the sunshine amongst friends, what's not to like!

We are looking forward to the next triples day on 24th June at Nailsea.
