Traditionally the first friendly match is always against Winscombe, and this year was no exception.
The weather was looking decidedly dodgy, so the two Captains made a decision to play the game over 18 ends, which turned out to be a good decision, allowing us to finish the game before the ‘ heavens opened’.
The match was played over 5 rinks, with Banwell winning on 4 of the 5 rinks. Highlights and disasters of the game are as follows:
Alan Shattock and his merry men were going along very nicely and by the 15th end were leading 13 - 11, when out of the blue they dropped a 7. Yes a 7. This left them no time to pull back.
Lost 16 shots to 18
Phil Villis and his team romped to an easy win only dropping shots on 5 ends
Won 28 shots to 9
Hilary Guckian and his team were struggling and by the 14th end were 10-17 in arrears.
But somebody must have said or done something because they picked up 12 shots on the last 4 ends to win the game.
Won 22 shots to 17
A convincing win by the President and his team, once again only dropping shots on 5 ends
Won 19 shots to 8
A very even game but Paul Aldus and his team were always one step ahead to win in the end
Won 21 shots to 15
Result Banwell B.C. 106 shots - WInscombe 67 shots
And finally fellow members. Have we done away with the winning rink ‘diddler’ money?
It is not like Phil Villis to turn down good money. Or have I got it wrong once again.....
