The club was in constant use over the weekend, with competition matches, league fixtures and social events taking place. Read on for a rundown of an entertaining few days.
Stag do!
No, it's not an invitation.....
You may or may not know that some time ago, we were asked if we could provide a venue for a group on a stag weekend to come along and bowl. Their plan was to play as many different sports as they could during the weekend - what a great idea!
Last Saturday morning, a group of 13 lovely guys arrived to have a go. As you can see, they were already split into blue and red teams.

After a quick run down on the finer points of bowling from Phil Villis and a couple of practice ends, they split across 3 rinks to play the first to 11 on each rink.

They soon got into the swing of it and there was some brilliant bowling across the board - it was hard to believe that they had never done it before. The competition was fierce but friendly, and the atmosphere was great. I think the helpers, Kerry, Steve, Bob and myself enjoyed it as much as they did.
We received a lovely thank you note saying that they had really enjoyed the experience and would love to return ... and we would be delighted to welcome them back.

A fantastic Sunday afternoon with cream teas and prosecco
As we hoped, it was a lovely sunny day. The club was ready for visitors, with Ann Amos, Jenny and Angela Bass ready to serve cream teas. The bar was open and the green set up for visitors and members alike to have a rollup.

Sue Sims was in charge of the raffle tickets, and arranged the many prizes.
People began to arrive at about 2pm, and after a while, the club was busy, both inside and out. The cream teas were going down well, as was the prosecco, with most of the tables full. The bar was busy, with Bob and Janis working hard to keep up.
Many of our social members and friends sat in the sunshine to enjoy the proceedings, which contributed to the jolly atmosphere in and around the clubhouse. The green was in use all afternoon; it was really good to see, with people getting to grips with bowling on their first attempt. There was a constant hum of laughter and people deep in conversation, as well as applause and cheers for the players on the green.
By the end of the event, both the mountain of scones and lake of prosecco were running out - a sure sign of success! We raised £283 for club funds from the cream teas and raffle, some of which will complete the fundraising for the defibrillator installed earlier in the season.
Thanks to all those who came and enjoyed their afternoon, and to all those who helped out in the clubhouse and on the green.
Look out for our next event - bingo night! It's on 10th July. Details will be available soon.

Internal competitions

The competitions are now well underway and we've now passed the first deadline in several of the competitions.
Unfortunately a few have had to concede their matches for various reasons, but there have been some very close games and some excellent entertainment if you have managed to get to the club to watch.

A reminder that the next deadline is Saturday 4th July for the men's pairs, ladies championship, 2 wood pairs, and beginners.
If you're playing in these, please check the schedules (on the website here, scroll along to the Internal competitions tab on the Spaces app or look on the wall in the clubhouse) and make sure you get your dates booked!
Don't forget to reserve a rink for your match on the website here, or scroll along to the Reserve a rink tab on Spaces.
Good luck to everyone

This week's match report
Over 55s, at home to Clarence Golds, 11/06/26
I told you porky pies last week how many matches that we had played; I said five. We have played eight now. I said we were fourth but in fact we are second, so we are doing very well indeed. By the time you read this report, we will have played Ashcombe Templars. We narrowly lost to them last time around, so I will be disappointed if we don't come away winners.
We had another great win on Thursday against Clarence Golds, dropping only one rink and winning comfortably on five others, with all rinks scoring over 20 shots and one scoring over 30 shots. The latter was also rink of the day - the skipper was Malcolm Laycock. His team amassed 32 shots to 3, and only dropping 3 ends. All-in-all it was a magnificent performance. Well done to all of his team.
The scores were as follows; Banwell 139, Clarence Golds 58. Points were Banwell 18, Clarence Golds 2. Very well played to everyone who played. We are still waiting for a whitewash claiming all twenty points. The way we are playing, it will be coming soon.

North 1 A team, at home to Chew Stoke, 13/06/26
The A team hosted bottom of the table Chew Stoke A on a lovely warm sunny afternoon at Banwell. After fairly quiet starts on all three rinks, Both Chris Wilson's and Allan Shattock's rinks got to grips with leads on both at the half way stage.
In the end, Chris's rink ran out solid winners 22-9 whilst Allan's four didn't score for 6 ends, and eventually lost by four.
Paul Aldus's rink rallied after being well behind, scoring 5 on the last three ends, securing an overall team score victory, despite losing the rink.
The result was Banwell 49, Chew Stoke 43, so Banwell won 8 points to 4. We are currently mid table.
John Wright
Captain of the Day
North 2 B team, away to Mark Moor, 13/06/26
This week, Banwell B team travelled to Mark Moor. The day did not start well as we turned up one short. Things continued to go downhill as the two remaining rinks did not play well.
We lost the match and did not appear to score any points. I apologised to their captain, being a player down, as it was very embarrassing.
After checking the cards a couple of days later, Paul Aldus noticed we'd actually won the rink where we had only 3 players (if the correct 25% adjustment is applied). That rink won 17-11 or 12.75-11 after deduction
So the final score was 32.75 - 57 to Mark Moor giving a result of 2-10
Mac Kirby
Captain of the Day
Over 55s at home to Ashcombe Templars, 16/06/26
We entertained Ashcombe Templars this week in the over 55's. What a good result we had, winning on five rinks. The losing rink went down by only two shots.
The rink of the week was mine, winning by a clear 22 shots; it was the Terrible Trevors who inflicted all the damage on our opponents. I was relegated to being an also-ran - no excuses on my awful performance. Mssrs Garfield and Burnett were excellent, so very well done. All the winning rinks scored twenty shots or more.
Scores on the day are Banwell 132, Ashcombe 71, points were Banwell 18, Ashcombe 2. We are still waiting for our first twenty pointer it will come.
Again, well done to all who played. What I like about playing for Banwell is the team spirit, with plenty of good humoured banter. Keep it going!

Umbrella, 15/06/2026
This week, we played on 3 rinks, with 2 triples matches (three woods) and 1 rinks match (2 woods). Overall, the scores were all quite close.

On rink 2, Martina and Wendy skipped. On paper, Wendy had the stronger team of Martin and Dave A. Richard and Jim made up team Martina and, after a slow start they gained a few points, then added to their score towards the end. Wendy's team held on, winning 13-10.
Mark W, John A and skip Sue T also started slowly on rink 3, failing to score on the first four ends. Will and Alex, led by Dave W, had an 8 point lead by the halfway point. Sue's team rallied during the second half, eventually, losing by just 2 points. The score was 13-11.
Finally on rink 4, skip Bob was on fire, leading Mark H, Wayne and Jenny to a 6 point win. Angie M, Kerry, Sue S and skip Trevor had no response for the first 5 ends, but after scoring a 4 on end six, they rallied. Unfortunately, just as they start to catch up, team Bob won 8 points over two ends. Although Trevor's team put up a fight on the last three ends, Bob and the crew took the match, winning 18-12.
