What's on in the clubhouse?, plus match report, 19th July

Last Friday's Bingo night was a great success as usual. The number attending was slightly down, probably due to the weather. After all, it was pretty hot in the clubhouse - and not just because of the bingo winnings!

A good time was had by all, as you can see by the pics below;

The bingo raised £70 and the raffle £89 for club funds.

Calling all women - Join us on Friday afternoon

Pink Ladies!

Not long now until our post-menopause health session - a talk by a local Physiotherapist. This women's event is on Friday 24th July at 2pm, followed by a delicious cream tea, with prosecco for an extra £1.50.

It is open to all - members, feel free to bring friends and neighbours for a fun and interesting afternoon.

This will be on 7th August, 6.30pm for 7pm start.

It's £3 per person, with teams of up to 4 people, or just come along on the night to join a team. Snacks will be available from the bar. Donations of raffle prizes will be gratefully received.

This week's match report

Over 55’s at home to Victoria Vikings, 8/07/2026

It was a very hot afternoon, but there was plenty of water to drink. After 10 ends, we stopped for ice lollies, which was very welcome. We have to thank Wendy for that, not only helping out on the bar and supplying ice lollies, but she was also at the club to meet someone from the water board to solve some drainage problems.

From having some very good results lately, we had a reality check from the Vikings -   thankfully no 'rape', but they certainly 'pillaged' and went away with the spoils. Before I give you the scores, we won on a couple of rinks; Hilary Guckian and Phil Villis. Hilary won by two shots, Phil by three shots. I have looked at the score cards trying to decide who is rink of the week - if we had VAR, I would ask them to choose!

Phil was behind until the 15^th end, picked up 5 shots and won by 3 shots. Hilary's rink fared much better thoughout the game. Neither side were more than 2 shots ahead, going into the last end the scores were level at 13 all. Picking up 2 shots on the last end, they ran out winners by 2 shots. I am not sure, so YOU CHOOSE.

The scores Banwell 82 shots, Victoria Vikings 97.

Points awarded are Banwell 4, Vikings 16.

Well done, Vikings.

Over 55s Captain

North 1A at home to Yatton A, 11/07/26

Another stifling hot 30° afternoon greeted us and visitors Yatton for our latest league match this week.

Chris Wilson's rink with Burnett, Grant and Williams were up against old Banwell boy Graham Millard, and recorded a very solid 20-12 victory on rink 2. On rink 3, Clarke, Allen and Shattock were all on good form on John Wright's rink and also recorded a solid 10 point victory 19-9.

Over on rink 5 we didn't fare so well....the McArdell, Pheasant, Aldus and Villis foursome kept at it, but struggled all afternoon and eventually went down 9-20 to a Yatton four that included another former Banwell player Kevin Gibbons.

The half time ice lolly break was a welcome addition in these continued hot conditions this year. The green continued to play pretty well though.

North 2B team away to Yatton B, 11/07/26

it was another hot afternoon of bowls for the B team at Yatton on Saturday. Unfortunately, it was only the weather that was hot as all 3 teams lost their matches. Yatton took the lead right from the start and we never managed to catch up, although Mac's team, including an excellent debut from Mark Wilkinson, came close, losing by just 2 points. 

I think the 'bowl of the day' must go to Will Everhard, who gently collected the jack with his wood and followed it into the ditch.

Thanks to Yatton for a great afternoon's entertainment and we look forward to doing better in our mixed friendly next week!

Umbrella, 06/07/2026

The green was in full use again prior to umbrella this week, with both coaching and competiton matches taking place. This made for a jolly atmosphere in the bar before the start of the umbrella, with the selection committee at work and players recovering from the heat of the afternoon with a cool drink.

This week, we played three rinks of triples. Dave Allen skipped for the first time with his team of Sue S and Jan D, but faced the crack team of Mark W, Martina and Wendy. Team Wendy won the evening, 21-9.

On rink 3 Jim, Alex and skip Wayne started well, winning 2 shots on the first two ends. However the all-ladies team of Jane, Kerry and skip Angela M were too strong, winning 19-9.

Finally on rink 4, Dave W - currently top of the leader board - led Jenny and Debbie to victory by 4 points in a fairly evenly matched game. Richard skipped for the first time, leading Martin and Doreen to an eventual score of 15-19.

Well done all!

The competition is hotting up, with 6 players with 70 points and over. Next week each player will lose their lowest score. This will happen every week until our last night on 24th August, so those with missing or low-scoring weeks can still race up the scoreboard.....
