Umbrella final sees a fab time had by all!
Everyone arrived on Monday this week ready for an entertaining evening. The fancy dress theme was Hot Summer Nights. As intended, it was interpreted in many different ways, including hawaiian shirts, Mexican Trevor, memories of long ago hot summer nights and a pair of naughty boys.

With 4 rinks playing, the competition was fierce; the fancy dress provided a bit of a handicap for some! A few of our very new players joined in, which added to the jeopardy. With 3rd place Bob not playing, each of the other 3 leaders was assigned their own rink and team members drawn from the remaining players.
The match
On rink 2, Martina - current leader - took position 1, with Jan D and skip John A supporting her. Their opponents were Dave A, Wayne and skip Martin. Team Amos started well but had a run of 5 ends without a score. Martin's team took advantage with a 4 and a 3 amongst the scores. John's team couldn't catch up and lost by 3 points 12-15.
Duncan, Alex and Trevor G played Jim, Steve and Kerry on rink 3. The saucy outfits worn by Alex and Steve caused much hilarity. However, the score was decisive. Trevor's team won by 29 to 8.
Rink 4 was the rink of 2nd-place Dave W. He skipped with teammates Kim and Doreen. They were against Sheena, Sue S and Wendy. It was nip and tuck throughout, with Wendy's team taking the spoils, 17-14.
Finally, on rink 5, Janis - currently 4th - skipped with Richard and Mark H against Jenny, Mark W and Angela M. Team Janis tried, but lost 9-15.
The Winner?
So, all 3 top-of-the-table players lost their matches. But, as we know, Umbrella scores are calculated by number of ends and points difference, so - who won?
After a difficult couple of years, she's been on form all season and deserved to win. Congratulations and well-played, Martina!

And finally....
Although the umbrella has finished for the season, coaching continues at 5pm next Monday (bank holiday), and there will be an informal rollup at 6pm for those who would like to play.
Rinks Day, Sunday 30th August, 2026
Banwell's Rinks Day was postponed after the sudden death of our friend Hilary Guckian. He was multiple winner of the trophy and also its organiser over recent years. As a club, we decided we would reschedule it and play in his memory.
The committee have decided to rename the cup the Hilary Guckian Rinks Day Trophy.
Sunday's teams are below, and can also be found on the website here, the competitions tab of the Spaces app and on the board in the clubhouse. Looking forward to seeing everyone there, whether you are playing or watching. Play starts at 10.00 - don't forget your packed lunch!
Finals Day, Saturday 5th September
Finals day will be here very soon, so could all current club champions please bring their trophies to the clubhouse over the coming week. The match schedule will be published on Saturday; please come along and support your favourites on the day.

This week's match report
Over 55s away to Winscombe Pioneers, 20/08/2026
We took a decent team to Winscombe this week, expecting a good result against the whipping boys of the division.
Phil Villis skipped the pick of the rinks with a 25-9 win, followed by Mal Laycock 17-8, Paul Aldus 17-10 and Mac Kirby pulling out a very last end win 22-21.
Barry Taylor, back from a stint away from over 55's games as skip, lost by only 3 points. John Wright's rink, despite pulling back from a 2-11 deficit at seven ends to lead 16-15, also ended up losing by three points.
The result was 111-84 and a win to Banwell (16-4) on points.

Tour side at home 22/08/26
We had a cracking sunny warm day for the return visit of Gilwern BC from South Wales for a tour match. It was a five rink triples encounter with some varying results.
Best rinks were Sue Sims' trio who came away with a solid 25-12 win. John Amos saw his team to victory 18-10 by putting in a brilliant last end wood when they were about 6 down.
The other three rinks didn't fare so well. Angie Bass and her triple narrowly lost 14-12, whilst Kim Wright and Mike Turnbull lost 11-20 and 8-24 respectively.
The overall result was a 74-80 defeat for Banwell

Men's friendly away at St Andrews, 25/08/26
On 25th August a friendly match was played at home against St Andrews. The match was played in a great friendly atmosphere, with very pleasant weather.
The match was very close with Banwell winning by 4 shots.
