Weekly news plus match report, 20th August 2026

Sadly, we are on the run down to the end of the season.

There are a few indicators, apart from the date. For example, almost all of the internal competitions have reached the finals stage, the fish and chips are on order and it's starting to get a bit cool, damp and dark by the time the weekly umbrella evening match comes to an end.

An invite to St Andrews open session has been sent out, for those who like to play indoors over the winter months.

Look out for autumn/winter club events such as the presentation dinner, Christmas drinks and skittles night - they will be advertised soon.

Rinks Day, Sunday 30th Aug 2026

Fond memories
Fond memories

As you know, we've re-arranged rinks day in Hilary's memory. We can look forward to a wonderful day recalling all the competitions Hilary arranged for the club, and the great times we had with him.

If you can play and have not yet signed up, please do so online or in the clubhouse by Monday afternoon to allow the selection committee to put together the teams.

Fancy dress and fish'n'chips, Mon 24th August

Don't forget our last night of umbrella is next Monday. As usual, we may have a Monday night rollup for a couple of weeks afterwards, depending on weather and light.

If you haven't yet ordered fish and chips but want some, today (Thursday 20th Aug) is the last day for ordering. Please use the order form here, and pay Bob at the Bar ASAP.

This year's fancy dress (optional) theme is Hot Summer Nights. Here are a few pics of previous fancy dress nights to give you some ideas!

This week's match report

North 1A away to Portishead RBL B, 15/08/2026

The A team travelled to Portishead to play the RBL B team.  Just like the over 55 game at Banwell, the game was slightly delayed due to a Portishead player stuck in traffic!

A third of the way through the game, it was close on all three rinks with John Wrights team up by 2, Phil Villis up by 3 and Chris Willson down by 3.  At the halfway mark, the rink of Trevor Burnett, John Rickerty, Paul Aldus and Phil Villis had pulled into a 13-4 lead.  Vic McArdell, Will Everhard, Lee Pheasant and Chris Wilson had pulled ahead by 3 shots, but Mike Turnbull, Brian Davis, Harold Clarke and John Wright had dropped 4 behind.

The green proved tricky for both sides with challenging lines, but Banwell stuck at it and saw the game out, winning on all three rinks.  John Wright winning 16-15, Chris Wilson 16-13 and Phil Vills 24-9.

Well done to all that played.

North 2B at home to Clevedon Prom B, 15/08/26

Another sunny Saturday afternoon saw Clevedon Prom pay us a visit. Skips Mal, Barry and Mac took to the green with high hopes.

On rink 2 Gerry, Jim and Dave A joined Mac against a crack Clevedon team, who were in the lead by 6 points after 4 ends. Although the Banwell team put the effort in, they failed to make an impact, with Clevedon winning the last 9 ends. Score 23-10.

Mal led Bob, John A and Kim on rink 3. The teams were evenly matched and it was close all the way until Banwell gained a 5 on end 12. Although team Laycock lost the final 3 ends, they won the match by 4 points; 18-14.

Finally, on rink 5, President Barry fielded a team of Wayne, Martin and Dave W. Again, it was nip and tuck with Banwell in the lead over the middle section of the match. Unfortunately, they lost the last 4 ends, conceding 21-15.

Congratulations to Clevedon Prom on their win.

Well done to all who played.

Ladies' friendly at home to Yatton, 19/08/26

On a bright and breezy Wednesday afternoon, the ladies played their re-arranged friendly against Yatton, which was cancelled a few weeks ago due to very high temperatures.

It was a close competition for both teams.  Martina, Sue (Sims) and Janis started well to lead after the first 3 ends, but then scored only 2 over the next 8 ends.  However, they did really well to pull it back and lost by just 4 points overall (12-16).

Jenny, Doreen and Wendy also had a very good start and were leading 14-5 after 12 ends.  Yatton then scored 7 over the next 3 ends to lose by just 2 points (14-12). It might all have been different if we had played 18 ends, instead of the 15 agreed!

Congratulations to Yatton ladies who have had a brilliant season to date, but also to our ladies who all put in good performances to make it such a close finish.

Umbrella, 17/08/2026

The competition is hotting up, with this week's match being the penultimate one of the season. We played two triples and one rinks.

Skips Martin and Wayne slugged it out on rink 1. Sue S, Jim and Martin did well, gaining 10 out of 15 ends. Although Wayne's team of Will and Richard tried their best, scoring a 3 on end 9, team Brand took the honours by winning by 13 to 9.

Meanwhile, next door on rink 2, there was a Garfield sandwich, with Trevor skipping lead Martina (also leading the competition) and Benedict and Jenny as the filling! They faced Jane, Steve K, Mark W and skip Dave W, currently 2nd in the umbrella table. The match was nip and tuck. However, team Garfield gained an early 5. Dave's team were behind all the way, even after getting a 4 on end 7. In the end, the score was 15-12 to Trevor and the gang.

Finally, on rink 4, John A, Doreen and skip Bob played Dave A, Mark H and Wendy. It was a similar story, with both winning ends. However, team Coleman edged ahead with a 3 and a 4, eventually winning by 7 points with a score of 15-8.

Next week, rather than being randomly drawn, the competition leaders will be placed on separate rinks. Who will be crowned champion?
