President's Day
The weather
It was an interesting start to the afternoon, with glorious sunshine to welcome members
back for the new season, followed almost immediately with a downpour of hail that
turned the green white for a few minutes.

It wasn't long before the hail disappeared and an afternoon of sun and minor showers with fresh winds then prevailed.
A good turnout saw 40 members line up for the annual photo followed by a spider, won by Doreen Dickinson.
The match
President Barry gave a formal welcome to the gathered throng. The teams had been selected by the President a few days earlier and, despite the best intentions, needed some last-minute adjustments to include those who decided they couldn’t play - and those who completely forgot to tick the box on the annual form to indicate they wanted to play!
You know who you are!
Apart from that, the rest of the afternoon went smoothly, with the President's team
taking on a Captain-of-the-day side, yours truly, over eighteen ends. Suffice to say
the President's team won on all five rinks although three rinks were very close
indeed, a couple of shots separating the winners from the losers. A significant win on
Rink 1 by a country mile skipped by Wendy Coleman saw the Presidents team home
ably, supported by a good win on Rink 3 by Paul Aldus.
The tea
President Barry then welcomed all to the club including Phil Villis and Stuart Kedward, who have returned to us this year after a spell in the wilderness.

A special mention must go to Benedict Searle who, at the age of 11, made his
professional debut on President's Day. He played on Rink 3 and twice drew the winning shot.
Following an excellent tea, the customary speeches and the raffle, the day
ended as it started, with much chat and banter which - after all - is the DNA of our club.
Finally...
In closing, it needs to be said that sadly, due to lack of numbers the first friendly of
the season has had to be cancelled and it was noted that numbers for the first few games
were also well below those of previous years. In addition, there are still places that
need to be filled for the Tony Hyde Memorial Shield on Sunday 26th April for it to be a
worthwhile competition.
Please help the club to have a positive season in the league, cup and friendly games
by putting your name down for selection, which happens every Monday night
throughout the season.
Thank you and good bowling!
Hilary Guckian (Captain of the Day)

Cleaning Rota
As we know, everyone takes part in the keeping the club clean. The cleaning rota is on the noticeboard in the clubhouse, along with the list of duties, and can be found on the website here. Cleaning days are a Sunday on the rota. Please tick the list in the clubhouse to show when you have completed the tasks on the day you are allocated.
Training for the new defibrillator

Captain of the Day
As you probably know, we do not have a designated captain this season, apart from Allan, who captains the over 55s. Because of this, a Captain of the Day will be selected for each match, and shown on the team sheet.
The selection committee will do their best to field any calls for last minute replacement players for league games, comps and friendlies. They will also prepare the cards (on selection nights) and appoint a Captain of the Day, ensuring they have the cards in time for the match.
These are the responsibilities for the Captain of the Day:
Meet the opposing captain pre match and complete the cards for the rinks
Hand out filled in cards to skips
Collect the cards after the match and agree a final score with the other Captain.
Post match, reciprocate the opposing Captains chat with same 'bon viveur'...
In the case of a B team League match - ensure that John or Hilary get the result, so that it can be reported in.

New tech in the clubhouse
The new tablets are now live and can be used. Our website and app are available via shortcuts on the home page - don't forget you will need to login with your website username and password to request to play or access online member information, then log out again afterwards. Many things on our website, such as match reports, committee pages and etiquette pages do not need a logon.
You do not need a password use the tablets to look at websites, the weather, the football scores, etc - just don't look at anything you want not want others to see, such as bank accounts, etc. The logon to the screen is the same as the code for the gate/ the men's changing room.
One of the tablets is on the bar, and can be used at the tables, but please do not take it outside.
If you need a hand accessing the tablets, talk to Kim.
This year's competitions
Wendy has compiled the list of comps based on what members indicated on the renewal form. Knowing that a few errors were made with the President's Day tick boxes, please can you check that you have entered the competitions you expect by clicking here, scrolling along to the Internal competitions tab on Spaces or looking at the competitions board in the clubhouse.
Please let Wendy know if you need any changes by 30th April, as the draws will be made the following week.
