Terrific Triples Day and Belting BBQ

A warm day greeted the six teams ready to do battle for the coveted Triples Cup, one of the oldest of all the trophies in the club. Unfortunately, only six teams took part this year, but it still made for a good tournament completed in the one day which was followed by a BBQ for members and their families and guests.

The competition was quite close in the early rounds but, by the time the last games started after lunch, it was clear that there were only two front runners for the final. A team skipped by Harold Clarke took on and beat a team skipped by John Wright to qualify for the final with three wins from three. John Wright's team also qualified for the final, with four points from six and a better shot difference over the other teams - and so, the final took place between the same two teams, but with different rink settings.

The final, played over 15 ends, was a close affair with one side and then the other taking the lead. On the last end Harold needed to pull two shots to draw the game and force a sudden death playoff extra end. With his last wood he bowled an excellent line to trail the jack into the ditch but sadly the second wood was from John Wrights team and so the final score was 15-14 to John Wright, Brian Davis and Dave Allen.
Dave Allen has now been on the winning team for both the Triples and Rinks competitions and is available for autographs at a price!
With the trophy presented by President Barry Taylor, the day finished with the club BBQ.
Thanks must go to local chefs Steve Merchant and Terry Byrnes for their cooking skills, Wendy Coleman and all the ladies who provided salads to go with the Tesco finest burgers and Terry’s excellent salmon parcels.

Thanks to Bob and Janis for the bar, Dee Bean for time keeping and ringing the bell and to all those members who do the behind scenes jobs in setting out rinks and club house ready for play to commence.
Hopefully next year more members will want to participate in what was a fun filled, friendly day for all involved.

Ladies'friendly at home to Winscombe, Tues 19th Aug
The ladies played a return friendly match against Winscombe on Tuesday. Having cancelled most of the matches scheduled for this season, it was great to be able to field 3 triples.
Kim's team (Angela and Doreen) had a brilliant game, leading from the beginning and winning by 18-10 after 18 ends. Sue, with Jan and Wendy, had a nip and tuck game until they reached the unlucky 13 ... and never got any further, with Winscombe coming back to win 19-13.
The final rink of Angie, Martina and Janis had a difficult start and were 10-5 down after 12 ends. However, they made a brilliant comeback and won 15-13 - an amazing recovery and giving us an overall win by 4 shots.
It was a great afternoon bowling and so good to be playing together again. Look forward to seeing Jenny and Debbie back next year and our new lady players, Jeanie and Sue.

Over 55s away at Winscombe, Thurs 21st Aug
The over 55's latest game was a warm dry day. Last time we played at Winscombe was in a B team fixture, and the green was described as impossibly fast; it seems they've been liberally watering it of late though, as it's now quite green - but bumpy.
The normally reliable three of Grant, Clarke and Wright found the going tough and went down by 9 points, Dave Williams's trio also lost, but narrowly.
There was success on all the other four rinks though - Mal Laycock and Barry Taylor both hit 28 in high scoring wins, whilst Trevor Garfield and Paul Aldus's rinks also won with scores in the twenties, resulting in a very good away win.
Score 130-95 to Banwell (16-4)
