Great efforts were made last night with fancy dress and Give us some green on the final Umbrella Night of the season. The top four were split across the teams, and offered the chance to be skip.

It was a jolly affair, with Jim losing his skirt and Kim tucking her kaftan into her knickers to avoid falling over. There were some very close matches, with Gerry's team winning on the last end, and Janis's losing on the last end.
It was starting to get a bit dark and damp when we all retired to the clubhouse, just as the fish and chips arrived - great timing Trevor! Martina made short work of dishing out the grub, although John Amos was a bit worried his scampi hadn't arrived, until Trevor found it at the bottom of the last box!
After a delicious supper, Trevor rang the bell to announce the winner and the runners up. Richard came 3rd; in his school boy outfit, he said that he might win it when he grows up....
Leopard Doreen came an admirable second, and purred in satisfaction. However, flapper Janis had a commanding lead going into the evening's play, which saw her through to victory; well played - and well dressed - Janis!
Thanks to everyone for playing throughout the season, and to our new members for joining in on the last couple of Monday nights. Finally, big thanks to Trevor and Gerry for running the competition this year.

Match Report
Over 55s at home to Clevedon Prom, Tues 12th Aug
Banwell's latest match in the over 55's League was at home to Clevedon Prom, who are flying high in the division. A roasting hot day at over 30 degrees resulted in the captains deciding on a reduced end game of 15 ends to minimise any overheating issues.
The skips of John Wright Paul Aldus and Trevor Garfield all recorded good wins by margins of 19, 11 and 1 respectively
Barry Taylor lost narrowly by 2, Harry Woodards lost by 8, on the ever-tricky rink 1 and Hilary Guckian by 4 points, not helped by an emergency water leak at home for his lead Wayne Butcher, who had to leave rather abruptly...!
The good wins outshone the defeats, with both teams winning three rinks each and the overall score points of 93 -75, giving Banwell a 12-6 win

North 1A Team at home to Portishead RBL, Saturday 16th August
It was yet another sweltering hot day, so the decision was taken by the Captains to reduce the game to 18 ends.
We tried a couple of new combinations this week in the 3 and skip positions, along with some strong front ends on all rinks. Hilary Guckian was paired with John Wright, who fought out a very tight 16-15 win.
Chris Wilson was with Paul Aldus as 3. They also came away with a close 16-14 victory. Captain Barry Taylor had old sparring partner Lee Pheasant as 3; they were three shots down going into the last end, needing one to win the game overall, but eventually Portishead took the one shot needed for victory.
Banwell 42 Portishead 43 (4-8)

North 2B team away to Ashcombe, Sat 16th Aug
The B team was captained by Trevor Garfield this week, and after a couple of late substitutions, tried to get to grips with Ashcombe's B team.
It didn't quite go our way, Trevor's adjusted side were quickly down 15-0 by end ten but rallied very well and retrieved nine shots back by end 17, eventually going down 23-10.
Mal Laycock's rink fared better achieving a very tight 19-19 draw, with nothing in it all the way to the end of the match.
Alan Cockayne did, however, bring home the bacon, leading his four to victory by 19-17 with a strong finish after being behind with two ends to play.
Score Banwell 48 Ashcombe 59 (3-9)

Mixed friendly at home to Yatton, Sun 17th Aug
John Amos was captain of the day for this match, which, after a late substitution and a bit of a rink mix up, started a little late - more time for a drink and a chat with our friends from Yatton!
Thanks go to Wayne for stepping in at the last minute.
The scores were close on 3 of the 4 rinks. Skip Angie Bass fought well with Doreen and Wayne, but with the Yatton team getting a 7 on one end, it was a struggle to catch up. They lost by 4 points in the end.
Skip John Amos led team Jim and Bob to victory. It was very close; they scored 2 on the last end, beating their opponents by 1.
It was a winning John Rickerty sandwich, with skip Trevor Garfield and lead Martina triumphing with a 10 point lead at the finish.
On rink 5, skip Kim, with Dave Allen and Janis, battled a Yatton team led by old Banwell friend Kevin Gibbons. They led until the 14th end, when Yatton got a 4 to draw level. Then it was neck and neck to the end, when the Yatton team clinched it by a single wood, winning 14-15. Well done to them.
A Banwell win overall, and a thoroughly enjoyable match.
