Fantastic Community Support: Banwell Bowling Club Coffee Morning Raises Funds for Freewheelers

On a frosty, but sunny morning, after taking an age to defrost the car, I approached the the bowls club. From a few places back in the traffic queue, I caught sight of an emergency motorbike at the entrance to the club car park. What a great way to advertise our charity coffee morning!

Freewheelers - this year's Captain's Charity

New Captain Chris with his wife Corriene, introducing Freewheelers as the Captain's charity this year

The club was full of people enjoying coffee, cake and conversation. There was a buzz of excitement in the air, along with Dee selling raffle tickets, stalls selling Christmas items and a display showing the work of this year's Captain's Charity - Freewheelers.

Whisky Galore!

Mal was in his usual spot with the whisky raffle. Tickets sold out early, with everyone keen to win the bottle of Famous Grouse.

There was a feeling of excitement as Mal rang the bell, and silence fell.

He drew the ticket to discover the winner - Rob!

Here he is, handing over the prize.

The Prize Draw

At last the time came for the prize draw. Dee engaged a young helper to draw the tickets, then Jenny handed out the prizes. There were oohs and aahs as the prizes were received, along with laughter as one of the gentleman received a very attractive handbag!

Information about Freewheelers

As the morning came to a close, Megan and Steve Brooks gave a brief summary of the work they do. Freewheelers is a registered charity which offers an out of hours, free of charge courier service to the NHS. Freewheelers use motorbikes to transport blood, pathology and microbiology specimens, patient notes, X-rays, breast milk and other medical supplies, plus deliver every night to two local Air Ambulance bases. All-in-all, the coffee morning was a great success. As Chris Laycock commented afterwards, it was an amazing morning; at one point there were no cups left, standing room only and the clubhouse was completely full.

Thanks to the ladies for their cake and tea/coffee making efforts, as well as doing all that washing up!

....and the best news?

The coffee morning raised £400.50 for Freewheelers - a fantastic amount!

Thanks go to all for a great start to this year's charity fundraising.
