Fabulous Finals Day

Updated: Sep 10

Well done to all of our finalists on Saturday (and Sunday afternoon), first of all for even getting to the finals, but also for giving us an amazing day's entertainment.

We were so lucky to have a dry, sunny day and even managed to squeeze Sunday's final into a break from the rain, after thunder and lightning in the morning and heavy rain later in the day.

Thanks to all the markers - I must particularly mention Hilary, who volunteered to mark the novices final which took 28 ends to decide… a bit more than he signed up for and then he had to play his pairs match!

Several people were involved in two or three finals. I'm sure there were some aching bodies by the end of the day, but they put in some brilliant performances throughout.  There were a few cliffhanger endings, with several matches won by only one or two shots.

It was great to see a good crowd of supporters as well and it was almost standing room only. Thanks to everyone who brought along food to share for lunch - a lovely spread as always.

Carole and Barry - Happy Diamond wedding anniversary!

A small gift of wine and flowers hardly seemed enough to mark the occasion, but it did come as a complete and happy surprise - Barry was as close to speechless as I have ever known! Many congratulations to you both.

Match Report

Mixed friendly away to Bridgwater, Thurs 4th Sept

Its been a small while since we played Bridgwater in any capacity, so it was nice to have a game with them. The weather was threatening, but a couple of small showers didn't dampen the enthusiasm or the green - neither did the dust storms from the tractor in the cricket ground.

One or two of our players had not played at this venue at all; Angie Merchant almost missed the start, but got steered back in the right direction at the last minute.

Banwell played triples to Bridgwater's rinks. Wendy Coleman had a small lead at tea but, as these things go, it all changes and they lost by 7.

Gerry Bean and John Wright skipped both their respective sides to 14-14 draws, whilst the stars of the day were Alan Cockayne, Doreen Dickinson and Angela Merchant, who went in to tea with a huge 22-3 lead, and sustained it second half coming out 32-7 winners.

Result 76-54 to Banwell.
